CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

____________

CHRISTINE

“You’re fucking kidding me.” Meg said, completely ignoring the fact that she just spit water all over herself. “What’s the punchline of this joke?”

“No punchline,” I said. “Turns out you were right about the fact that I’m a monster fucker.”

Telling her was going well so far. And my mates had no qualms about me sharing what had happened between us.

Alex had woken me early in the morning, our bodies having slipped apart in the night. I was barely conscious as he wrapped me in a blanket and carried me back to my apartment. No one saw us. It was the middle of the night, and I noticed that he was able to be silent more than I believed possible.

He held me in the shower, washing himself off my skin before putting me to bed. “I need to tell Meg,” I whispered before he went to the window. “She’s going to ask where I keep disappearing to. And she’ll probably want a demonstration.”

“We can do that.”

“Not a naked demonstration.”

He kissed my forehead. “That’s only for you mon amour.”

Rehearsal had been even better, the first few days of jitters wearing off and people becoming more confident in what they’d learned while in our separate preparation phase. Now Meg and I were in my apartment, taking a coffee break before we both had evening costume fittings, and I’d told her.

Luckily, the coffee was still brewing, so it was water and not coffee for the unexpected spit take. “Christine…what? Is this about the haunted voices you’ve been hearing? Cause I love you, but this sounds a little…” she paused. “I don’t want to use the word crazy, because you’re not. But you know how this sounds, right?”

Pressing my lips together, I flipped off the coffee pot and grabbed mugs for us. “I’m very aware of how it sounds, believe me.”

“Okay. Good. Good. And this is not a joke?”

“It is not a joke.” I glanced at the time. The sun should have slipped off the building by now. “Any of you nosy eavesdroppers want to come back me up?”

Meg stared at me, and then jumped as the window creaked and Erik slipped inside. “What the fuck?”

“Nice to see you again,” he said with a grin.

Alex and Marius slipped in behind him. The three of them together made me wish that we were alone. I locked eyes with Alex. “You were right, she needs a demonstration.”

Erik reached out to shake her hand, and she took it, then immediately jumped back when his hand shifted to stone. “Oh my fuck.”

“It was me on the roof,” I said. “The four of us were up there talking, and I leaned on one of the not-alive gargoyles. It cracked, and I fell. The reason I’m alive is that they were able to catch me with stone hands.”

It had been hard enough to say the gargoyle thing out loud—I hadn’t been able to get the part about us being mates out. That probably would have been a few steps too far without seeing it for real.
